Newcastle takeover saga takes another twist with American consortium reportedly interested

Former Liverpool technical director Damien Comolli is leading an American consortium which is reportedly interested in a takeover at Newcastle United - should the Saudi-led bid fall through.

The Premier League are yet to make a decision on whether a Middle East consortium - fronted by financier Amanda Staveley - have passed or failed the owner's and director's tests which started 14 weeks ago.

Magpies head coach Steve Bruce has called upon the Premier League to make a 'quick' decision on the bid due to the ongoing certainty on Tyneside.

American businessman Henry Mauriss has already signalled his interest in a deal should proposed takeover fall through, with ClearTV chief executive believed to have verbally offered £350m for the Magpies.

Now, the Daily Star reports United have been shortlisted by an American consortium - fronted by Comolli - who are seeking to buy a Premier League club.

Like Mauriss, the consortium is understood to be mulling over a move should the Saudi-led takeover fall through.

Crystal Palace, Southampton, and West Ham are the other clubs reportedly under consideration. The Hammers are understood to be the leading candidate for the consortium, provided David Moyes' side avoid relegation.

Comolli has worked at Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool in a number of recruitment and strategic positions.
