Newcastle United’s proposed takeover is moving close to the final stages.

Lee Ryder reports this morning that the group attempting to broker a deal with Mike Ashley is now expecting the Premier League checks to be completed and after the money is transferred, there could then be a joint statement by all parties to announce a new era at St James’ Park.

He reports that a source close to the group believes the deal is reaching “end game” – although Steve Bruce has been offered no guidance whatsoever from the club on what stage a deal is at.

The checks are at their “final stages” and a slew of international transfer stories have emerged, allowing Newcastle fans to get excited about the prospect of a new era.

News that the deal is close came as Sky Sports reported that Mauricio Pochettino is the club’s number one target to take over from Steve Bruce.

They report that United’s prospective owners would be willing to pay £19million a year to the Argentine, who has been out of work since Spurs fired him earlier in the season.

A story claims the United prospective owners see him as the perfect candidate to “try and turn Newcastle into one of Europe’s top clubs”.

The report says that Rafa Benitez is another choice, with a return for the Spaniard being considered. He is currently on a big contract with Dalian Yifang, but would be interested in returning to Newcastle if the opportunity arose.
