Newcastle takeover headlines with former player's bold prediction and Coutinho odds slashed

Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard made the bold prediction that a takeover announcement would be made on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, former Magpies' shot-stopper Shay Given has given his view on his hopes for United if a takeover is concluded.

Here are your top Newcastle United stories for May 19:

Bernard's prediction

Olivier Bernard has boldly claimed that the Newcastle United takeover will be announced on Tuesday.

The bid put together by Amanda Staveley, and backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben Brothers, is currently in the hands of the Premier League, who are conducting their owners' and directors' test.

There is no formal guidance on how long that process can take and matters have been complicated by three separate parties being involved in the bid; the Premier League having their hands full with Project Restart; objections being raised when it comes to Saudi's alleged links with beoutQ and the country's human rights record; and everything having to be carried out virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic.

But Bernard is '80% confident' that an announcement will be made on Tuesday and that has come from a 'good source'.

Why Pochettino would be a 'huge coup'

Former Chelsea star Craig Burley is not convinced Mauricio Pochettino would be interested in the Newcastle job.

The former Spurs boss has been linked with the manager's role at St James' Park should the Amanda Staveley-led takeover be completed, although it is believed Steve Bruce will get the chance to show what he can do to any new owners.

Pochettino had success at Tottenham despite being on a limited budget for much of his time in North London.

He has been linked with the manager's hotseat at the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United previously, and Burley is unsure whether the Argentinian would be tempted to wait for one of these roles to become free in the summer.

Given's takeover verdict

Shay Given admits he is excited about the potential of Newcastle United under new ownership.

A £300m takeover of the club, led by Amanda Staveley and backed by Saudi Arabai's Public Investment Fund and the Reuben brothers, is awaiting approval from the Premier League.

And Given, who made 354 appearances for the Magpies, is anxiously awaiting the completion of the deal, just like all Newcastle fans.

Coutinho odds slashed

Odds have tumbled on Philippe Coutinho returning to the Premier League, with Newcastle and Chelsea touted as two of the most likely destinations by bookies.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to St James' Park as part of the current takeover, with the former Liverpool man seen as a potential marquee signing for Amanda Staveley and Co once the deal gets the green light from the Premier League.

However, there is likely to be plenty of interest in his services, with Coutinho set to leave Barcelona following a patchy loan move to Bayern Munich.

Rose on 'shock to the system'

Danny Rose admits having two or three days off a week at Newcastle United has been a 'shock to the system' after previously being 'programmed a certain way' under former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The 29-year-old worked with Pochettino for more than five years before the Argentine was sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho back in November.

Rose struggled for game time under Mourinho and, conscious of playing regularly ahead of Euro 2020, secured a mid-season loan move to Newcastle.

It had been a while since Rose had played under an English manager and while Steve Bruce certainly works his players hard when they are at the training ground - Jonjo Shelvey has previously spoken of the amount of running they have to do during the week - the Magpies' head coach has been keen to give the squad time off when possible, too.

PL confirm positive tests

The Premier League has confirmed that six individuals tested this week have tested positive for coronavirus and will enter a seven day self-isolation period.

Clubs in the top-flight approved return to training protocols on Monday and regular testing for players and club staff plays a key-part in Project Restart plans, which aims for matches to resume in mid-June.

The first round of testing has taken place in recent days and it has been confirmed that six out of 748 tests came back positive.

Bruce on training return

Steve Bruce has revealed that the 'vast majority' of Newcastle United players he has spoken to are 'ready to go back to work' as they prepare to return to training at Benton.

Premier League clubs have agreed to start non-contact training in small groups with social distancing as part of phase one of Project Restart.

Newcastle players were tested for COVID-19 at the training ground on Sunday and players and staff will return to the club's base on Tuesday at pre-arranged times.

The players, who were previously handed their own individual training programmes to carry out at home, have not parked up at Benton for more than nine weeks.

Danny Rose has previously aired his concerns, rightly pointing out that 'football shouldn’t even be spoken about coming back until the numbers have dropped massively', but Bruce has since spoken to the defender and has been heartened by the squad's overall response.
