Newcastle takeover: Amanda Staveley's explosive Talksport interview - as she hits back at Simon Jordan

Amanda Staveley has spoken with confidence that the Newcastle United takeover deal will go through - after a heated debate on Talksport with former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan.

Jordan questioned Staveley's intentions and claimed she was "barking at the moon" by asking the government to intervene on the transparency of Mike Ashley's double legal bid.

In an explosive piece of radio, hosted by Jim White, Jordan also branded Newcastle fans as "gullible" and that the Premier League clubs and the top-flight hold the key to the arbitration case being made public.

Staveley started by thanking fans who have made the journey to London to protest about the lack of public information on Ashley's legal cases as he looks to push through the takeover and allow the Ripon-financier, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to buy the club.

Staveley told Talksport: "I am so staggered by all the incredible support we have had from the fans over the last year.

"Many of them today are taking time out of their busy lives to travel to London.

"We're so grateful for your support and we really think that the arbitration process should be made public so that you guys (the media) and the wonderful fans can see exactly what is going on.

"One of the greatest draws to us and the club was its fantastic fanbase.

"So I'd like to take the time to say thank you to you all."

Staveley then added: "I have made my points very clear and I think the arbitration is key.

"We want this transaction and we want to very much be able to invest in the club.

"To invest in the north, and invest in Newcastle.

"There's no reason why that can't go ahead.

"Obviously this arbitration process is critical, and I think that is why all of us need to see what is going on between the Premier League and Mike Ashley."

Then Staveley pleaded with the Premier League to do their bit and make the information public.

Staveley also said: "One thing I want to make clear is that we want to have good relations with the Premier League.

"We're trying to become part of their institution.

"We are huge fans of football at all levels, grassroots levels is very important, so we are very supportive of Mike and we hope we can be supportive of the Premier League.

"We would never have backed a Euro Super League plan and I am hoping in the future, there's a way forward.

"I don't want to draw battle lines, I want to say: 'Look this process is going on and we want to buy and invest in the club'.

"We'd like the Premier League to run the arbitration in public.

"Mike would like the same and every question about how committed we were, what we want to do, it can be answered.

"I think it is an opportunity for the Premier League to take a view that they welcome the transparency as well.

"If there were any protests after it people can say it was run with transparency and that is important."

Then the interview took a turn with Jordan claiming Staveley was effectively leading supporters on and that she was "barking at the moon" in terms of asking the Premier League to go public.

Staveley impressively fought back and underlined the fact that it was the Premier League who had originally offered the arbitration in the first place.

Staveley said: "Simon I think actually you are wrong.

"I tell you why.

"You say we have had 28 years and we are barking at the moon.

"Football has changed dramatically in the last two years because of Covid.

"I know you aren't pro for our deal and I'm not going to get in a spat on Talksport.

"Have your opinions and that's fine.

"You have never met me and don't know who I am.

"You have never looked at our business plan.

"The Premier League have the right to vote on this and we might do.

"The PL is run by a board and can make decisions on how this is run.

"Arbitration is a particular point of a particular point of law.

"It is not something typical of what has gone on for sports arbitration in the last year.

"The government have asked and said that this process should be transparent they are supportive of it.

"The Premier League offered arbitration, they didn't ask all the other clubs if it was ok.

"They have the ability to go out and do this.

"And saying the fanbase is gullible is absolutely ridiculous."

Jordan then again went back in and asked if the Saudi backing was still there.

Staveley's final message to fans was: "We are looking forward to welcoming you into St James' Park.

"And we are looking forward to trying to get this transaction over the wall.

"And it will do.

"We are all still there, and are all still passionate about Newcastle - all consortium members are.

"I have made it very clear."
