Newcastle supporters react in disbelief as Bruno Guimaraes is benched for Brazil's World Cup opener

Newcastle United supporters have reacted in disbelief as Bruno Guimaraes has been forced to settle for a spot on the bench in Brazil's opening World Cup fixture. Tite's side are considered one of the favourites for the tournament, and begin with a Group G clash against Serbia on Thursday night.

Guimaraes has so far earned eight caps for his country since making his senior debut in 2020. The midfielder booked his place in Brazil's 26-man squad following a scintillating start to life in the Premier League with the Magpies.

The former Lyon playmaker is considered to be one of the best players in the top-flight outside the so-called 'Big Six', but has not yet done enough to earn a starting spot for Brazil. Tite named Manchester United star Casemiro and West Ham's summer signing Lucas Paqueta as the holding midfielders, with Neymar sat behind Raphinha, Richarlison and Vinicius Jr in attack.

Reports in the build-up to the match suggested Guimaraes would begin the competition as a substitute. However, this news has still seemingly come as a surprise to Newcastle fans, and this is how they reacted to the news on social media.

'Bruno is better'

'Can't get injured on the bench'

'Doesn't seem much balance'

'Get to Specsavers'

'Give Serbia a chance'

'What's Paqueta done?'
