Newcastle suffer Joelinton injury blow as striker hobbles out of York friendly

Newcastle United have been dealt an early pre-season blow after Joelinton picked up a muscle injury against York City.

The £40million Brazilian forward - who was handed the number 7 shirt yesterday after Callum Wilson took number 9 - made an early run down the left and crossed the ball to make a promising start at the LNER Community Stadium.

However, moments later the former Hoffenheim star pulled up with a problem and required lengthy treatment.

After getting the go ahead to try to run it off, it was obvious the South American was in discomfort.

Joelinton was replaced by Dwight Gayle after just 18 minutes.

He pointed to the top of his thigh as he was hooked and required an ice pack.

At this stage of pre-season, precautionary measures are not unusual and Joelinton was at least able to watch the game from the stands.

But this is far from the dream start to pre-season for either Joelinton or the Magpies as the new season gets under way in four weeks.
