Newcastle students' AI firm joins programme backed by Google and Amazon

An artificial intelligence (AI) company started by two Newcastle University students has been accepted onto a national programme supported by some of the world’s biggest tech giants.

Neura Technologies has been selected to join the Machine Intelligence Garage programme, which aims to help AI startups grow by helping them overcome many of the barriers facing small technology companies . These include providing access to computation power and specialist equipment.

The programme is delivered by Digital Catapult and is supported by major tech companies such as Google , Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Nvidia.

Neura Technologies specialises in developing AI and machine learning software that can analyse videos and images. It was founded by Newcastle University PhD students Scott Stainton and Shaun Barney and its clients now span a range of industries, including healthcare, transport, environmental and defence.

The company is one of 12 businesses from across the UK to access the Machine Intelligence Garage programme.

Mr Stainton, managing director of Neura Technologies, said: “It is with great pride that, after multiple interview stages with panel members from prestigious institutes such as Cambridge University, Oxford University, and the Alan Turing Institute, Neura Technologies is officially adding their name to the list of companies accepted onto Digital Catapult’s Machine Intelligence Garage.

“We are honoured to be recognised for our efforts and hope this partnership will strengthen our ability to keep innovating and investing in Artificial Intelligence in the North East.”

Michelle Szaraz, Machine Intelligence Garage programme manager at Digital Catapult, said: “We’re excited to welcome Neura Technologies to our latest and largest ever cohort.

The entrepreneurs have already received start-up support from Sunderland Software City , as well as mentoring from the National Innovation Centre for Ageing at Newcastle University.

Centre director Prof Patrick Bonnett said: “We’re delighted that Neura Technologies is joining the Machine Intelligence Garage programme.

“Scott and Shaun have shown true entrepreneurial vision in bringing their business venture to this exciting point. Connecting with innovative tech companies and sharing ideas will go a long way towards helping them grow their exciting startup into a successful business.”
