Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin leads the Premier League amid James Maddison hint

Following the opening day of the Premier League season, Newcastle United's Allan Saint-Maximin tops the table for the most progressive yards carried, subsequent to his excellent showing against Nottingham Forest.

The Toon's number ten was a constant threat throughout, creating chances and driving forward from midfield, with Forest defender Neco Williams having a torrid afternoon against the Frenchman.

And the 25-year-old managed to carry the ball a total of 386 yards in progressive positions during the 90 minutes, almost 100 yards more than the next player on that chart, Aston Villa's Matty Cash.

But, Saint-Maximin was not the only Newcastle player to feature on that list, with Bruno Guimares propping up in tenth on the list with 188 yards, potentially providing an insight in how Eddie Howe would like his side to play of breaking the lines in midfield with runs rather than passes.

The comparison comes following the Magpies' interest in Leicester City's James Maddison, who featured in the Foxes' 2-2 draw with Brentford at the King Power Stadium amid interest from Tyneside.

Maddison's style of play is something that has attracted a lot of attention from clubs in the Premier League, and he also features on the list, albeit 19th out of 20, which further reiterates Howe's idea of how he wants his side to play.

The Leicester City man travelled with the ball for 134 yards in the Foxes opening game, showing a willingness to play and impress despite interest from the Magpies.

Newcastle have already had two bids rejected for the 25-year-old midfielder, but many expect them to return with a third bid for the Englishman, with the Foxes desperate for transfer funds and still remain the only club in the Premier League to make a signing during the summer window.
