Newcastle social club fined £25,000 for illegally screening Premier League matches

A Newcastle social club and its management staff have been jointly ordered to pay costs of £25,000 for illegally screening live Premier League matches.

Forest Hall Social Club on Errington Terrace was taken to court by the Premier League who successfully sought an injunction to restrain it from showing unauthorised live broadcasts of matches.

The club and its two managers were further held jointly liable to pay £25,000 in costs, following a High Court ruling.

A Premier League spokesman said: “The judgment handed down by the High Court highlights again that the courts take piracy seriously and there are serious consequences for those who are involved in this illegal behaviour. This decision demonstrates the high risks publicans take when they show unauthorised broadcasts of live Premier League matches.

“The Premier League’s significant financial support for the wider game and communities is made possible through being able to sell and protect our broadcast rights. We will continue to take legal action against those who supply illegal systems and those who show unauthorised live broadcasts of Premier League matches in their premises.”
