Newcastle set to miss out on Jens Cajuste, according to reports in Sweden

Newcastle United have missed out on the signing of FC Midtjylland midfielder Jens Cajuste, according to reports in Sweden.

Chronicle Live reported last month that the 21-year-old had been looked at by Magpies scouts and sources in Denmark suggesting Newcastle had told the Danish side that Cajuste was 'high on their priority list'.

However, United faced competition from a clutch of Premier League clubs - including Leeds and Brentford - for his signature, and it seems as if the newly promoted Bees have won the race.

Swedish publication Sport Bladet claim Brentford have agreed a transfer fee with their sister club that will see Cajuste make the move to the Brentford Community Stadium.

It is unclear how much Brentford will pay for Cajuste but the same report says Midtjylland knocked a back a bid in the region of £10million from French side Stade Rennais earlier this week.

Newcastle are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements and Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock remains their number one target.

"The midfield area is a must, in my opinion," Steve Bruce said last week when pressed on where Newcastle's transfer priorities lie.

"We’ll look to try and strengthen there first.

"We're very, very short in the middle of the park at the minute.

"Very, very short. It's something we need to address."
