Steve Bruce has vowed to 'batten down the door' this summer but the Newcastle United head coach is not expecting to spend 'million and millions of pounds' in the transfer market.
A lack of match day revenue has hit Newcastle and clubs across the country hard in the last year or so and the pandemic will limit what the Magpies will be able to do when the transfer window reopens.
Newcastle spent £33.5m in transfer fees to bring in Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis last summer while Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick and Mark Gillespie all arrived on Bosman deals.
Given how his scouts have been limited by travel restrictions, perhaps, it would be a surprise if Bruce moved away from targeting players who have Premier League experience or who have, at the very least, previously played in Britain.
"I'm sure every club will be scrutinising a Bosman, for example," Bruce told reporters on Zoom. "They're always attractive for obvious reasons but, look, you quietly plan ahead - of course you do.
"Like what we just witnessed in January, I think every club, the managers I speak to, have no doubt been hit badly financially, which is understandable when you consider the last year.
"We're all going to have to cut our cloth and that's always difficult. I have to understand, and I think all of our supporters will understand too, that there won't be millions and millions of pounds spent this summer but I don't think we're alone in that.
"Up and down the country, clubs have been struggling and we'll see what we've got. It's my job to batten down the door and get as much as I can, and see what we can do."
