Newcastle's World Transplant Games joy captured in moving song by Beccy Owen

This video simply sums up what the World Transplant Games is all about and is a must-watch for anyone who spots a colourful set of tracksuited athletes in the North East this week.

Newcastle songwriter Beccy Owen's lyrics tell the stories behind the smiles at the joyful opening ceremony for the Games which followed a parade through Newcastle city centre.

Participants from over 50 countries across the world paraded from Eldon Square to Sport Central at Northumbria University with their national flags. And once inside Sport Central, an official opening ceremony welcomed all the teams was hosted by actress Charlie Hardwick.

Charlie, Emmerdale's Val Pollard, is shortly to star in a second outing for the Alan Hull-inspired Clear White Light at Live Theatre.

Athletes and their supporters heard from World Transplant Games Federation president Chris Thomas and chairman of the local organising committee Graham Wylie before exploring the local food and drink that was on offer on Northumbria University campus.

The official World Transplant Games Anthem was launched at the opening ceremony with an emotional performance from The Kentones, a choir from Kenton School.

Acclaimed North East-based singer-songwriter, performer and musical director Beccy Owen is behind the anthem named Love Runs Through Our Veins which uses stories of transplantation to celebrate organ donation and the second chance of life that it gives.
