Newcastle's transfer interest in Liverpool's 'unexpected hero' and Jetro Willems bombshell

Here is your 4am Newcastle United transfer digest.

Nat Phillips

Newcastle United and Premier League rivals Burnley hold an interest in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips - according to the Sun.

The centre-back had only played one senior game for the Reds prior to this season, but a catalogue of injuries led to the 24-year-old becoming a regular starter.

Liverpool registered nine clean sheets in Phillips' 20 appearances this campaign, but the former Stuttgart loanee will find his opportunities reduced next term with the arrival of Ibrahima Konate and the return of Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk.

Alan Nixon reports Burnley have already made an inquiry for the centre-back, but warns they could face for his signature from the Magpies.

He wrote: "Burnley have also made an inquiry for Liverpool’s unexpected hero Nat Phillips, who is fancied by Newcastle, and have a long-standing interest in Dael Fry at Middlesbrough."

Jetro Willems

Newcastle United will not move for former loanee Jetro Willems this summer - according to Football Insider.

The Dutch international became a popular figure on Tyneside during a loan spell in 2019/20, where the wing-back netted twice in 20 appearances in black-and-white.

Willems' stint at St James' Park was brought to an abrupt end after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Chelsea in January 2020, and the 27-year-old has not played a first-team fixture since.

The former PSV man will become a free agent this summer following the end of his contract at Eintracht Frankfurt, and the wing-back has previously made no secret of his desire to return to Newcastle.

However, Football Insider claim a limited budget means the Magpies are not in the market for another left back with Jamal Lewis and Matt Ritchie already at the club.
