Newcastle's summer signing from Arsenal bags twice as Under-23s secure win at Burnley

Newcastle United summer signing Stan Flaherty has opened his account for the club with two goals in the Premier League 2 clash with Burnley in a 3-1 win.

The Magpies pulled off a win against the Clarets in a behind closed doors clash at the Lancashire FA in Leyland.

Flaherty, 18 and signed from Arsenal earlier this year, opened the scoring with a free-kick after 32 minutes before Burnley hauled themselves level before the break through Max Thompson.

New reserve-team skipper Ludwig Francillette put Newcastle back ahead on 68 minutes.

Ten minutes later Flaherty was on the mark again to grab his second of the afternoon to extend the lead to 3-1.

It looked like United had made life difficult for themselves when they conceded a late penalty but first-teamer Ashley Barnes struck the post with his spot-kick.

United's next game will be against Crewe in the EFL Trophy before it will be decision time for some of the Under-23 squad members.

Lewis Cass is wanted by Hartlepool for a loan stint while Jack Young has been looked at by Tranmere Rovers

UNITED: Brown, Cass, Brookwell, Francillette, Gamblin, Young, Carlyon, Longelo, Anderson, Flaherty, Toure.
