Newcastle's subtle message to jubilant fans following takeover and Mike Ashley's goodbye

Newcastle United's protracted takeover saga has finally drawn to a conclusion which is being celebrated on Tyneside.

Almost 18 months after Mike Ashley agreed a deal to sell the Magpies, the keys to St James' Park are finally in the hands of the consortium consisting of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Amanda Staveley, and the Reuben brothers.

It has been a frustrating wait for expectant United fans who had to endure months of silence despite repeated calls for transparency.

Thousands logged on for last week's preliminary Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) hearing, reflecting the fervour for answers on the potential change of ownership.

United's winless start to the season had heightened apathy in the stands, with head coach Steve Bruce's position again coming under scrutiny.

But following a whirlwind two days, statements from the Magpies and the Premier League confirmed the takeover had finally been sanctioned on Thursday.

Delighted supporters received updates from the likes of Staveley and expected new club chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF.

However, there was another subtle change on the club's social media account which signalled a line has now been drawn under Ashley's turbulent 14-year tenure on Tyneside.

Supporters clicking on to Newcastle's Twitter account will have noticed a simple new message in the club's bio, which reads 'a new era begins...'.

With another relegation battle on the horizon following two demotions and countless mid-table finishes, it is a statement which will undoubtedly be welcomed by supporters.
