Newcastle's state of play with fresh top-four twist as Liverpool slip up and Tottenham bounce back

Newcastle United remain sixth in the table and could leapfrog Liverpool following the latest round of Premier League results. Eddie Howe's side will look to return to winning ways after three straight defeats when they host Wolves in a televised clash on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies play the final match of the latest Premier League gameweek, but already know the fortunes of their nearest rivals in the top-four race. United now know victory on Tyneside in front of the Sky Sports cameras will see them finish the weekend in fifth spot.

On the back of a historic seven-goal thrashing of rivals Manchester United, Liverpool fell to a shock defeat at bottom-side Bournemouth in Saturday's early kick-off. Philip Billing scored the only goal of the game as the Reds missed the chance to temporarily go above Tottenham in the table.

Antonio Conte's side have endured a miserable run of three straight defeats which has ended their ambitions in both the Champions League and FA Cup. However, a brace from England captain Harry Kane and a second-half strike from Son Heung-min saw Tottenham earn a much-needed 3-1 home victory over Nottingham Forest.

It means Newcastle are now seven points adrift of Tottenham in fourth place, albeit with three matches in hand. Howe's side are also one point behind Liverpool, having played two games fewer than last season's FA Cup and Carabao Cup winners.

Brighton threatened to move level on points with Newcastle after twice taking the lead at Elland Road. However, the in-form Seagulls eventually had to settle for a 2-2 draw at Leeds United, meaning the Magpies remain two points clear of the Seagulls.

Newcastle could still kick-off on Sunday afternoon having dropped down to seventh place. Fulham have played two games more than the Magpies, and victory over league leaders Arsenal would see Marco Silva's side move above both United and Brighton in the table.
