Newcastle's Sander Berge transfer link proves midfield gap Magpies need to plug

By Chris Knight

Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs understood to be 'monitoring' Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.

That's according to Football League World, who claim the Magpies would face competition from Rangers for the Norwegian international's signature.

Berge's future at Bramall Lane was the subject of intense speculation over the summer following the Blades' relegation to the Championship.

However, the move that many expected failed to materialise with the report citing lingering fitness concerns after the 23-year-old's recovery from hamstring surgery earlier this year.

Berge has made five Championship appearances so far with Slavisa Jokanovic's side surprisingly yet to earn a league victory following their demotion.

Berge is the latest midfielder to be linked with Newcastle in recent months, with Steve Bruce believed to be keen on recruiting another engine room option.

Joe Willock arrived as the only senior signing in the summer window, and the likes of Hamza Choudhury and Boubacar Kamara were linked on deadline day.

Jeff Hendrick has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot since joining in the summer of 2020, while Sean Longstaff's future remains in doubt with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron have filled in the 'number eight' roles, but Bruce has been linked with a number of midfielders to better fit the current 5-3-2 formation.
