Newcastle's Ryan Fraser won't fly to Belgrade with Scotland for Euro 2020 play-off

Newcastle United's Ryan Fraser will not join up with the Scotland squad for their Thursday's Euro 2020 play-off against Serbia.

The forward missed Newcastle's defeat by Southampton due to a hamstring injury and is set to sit out at least this week's game, and is not expected to feature for his country during the international break.

Scotland will also be missing former Newcastle defender Grant Hanley, with neither player set to travel to Belgrade.

Scotland assistant coach Steven Reid said: "Ryan and Grant Hanley at the moment are struggling.

"It's disappointing. Grant has missed a little bit of football and unfortunately is not going to be with us, and Ryan as well.

"He performed really well in the past camp so that is a blow but we have got strength in depth.

"We have obviously bigger numbers than usual in the squad and feel as if we have a squad which is capable of competing well at our strongest in the Serbia game and going into the two Nations League games after."

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce had earlier indicated that Fraser would sit out the internationals, saying: "Unfortunately, yesterday (last Thursday) he came into the treatment room and wasn't happy.

"We then scanned it and revealed a small tear. He won't make the internationals."

Scotland's preparations last month were hit by a positive Covid-19 test for Stuart Armstrong, which also took Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney out of the squad.

Manager Steve Clarke also suffered further call-offs through injury and suspension during the triple header but his team still managed to record a hat-trick of wins, against Israel in the play-off semi-final and over Slovakia and Czech Republic in the Nations League.
