Newcastle Pride march route, timings and road closures as Northern Pride parade returns

This weekend will see Pride celebrations take place across Newcastle city centre and the Town Moor, promising a huge line-up of festivities to celebrate the region’s LGBTQ+ community.

Northern Pride is the host of UK Pride this year, so visitors can expect celebrations on a national scale. From a star-studded line-up of acts taking to the main stage including Mel C, Joe McElderry and Choriza May, to funfair rides, food vendors and a Community Village, the Town Moor is set to be a vibrant hub of entertainment across the weekend.

But of course, it wouldn’t be Pride without the famous march through Newcastle that sees members of the community and their allies don their finest rainbow attire to bring a sea of colour through the city centre. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Pride march.

When is the Pride march?

The march will take place on Saturday 23 July, and will begin at 12pm. Organisers have urged those planning to attend to make sure they arrive early so they can take their place in the procession.

The route

The march is a mile and a half long in total, and is expected to take around 50 minutes to complete. The meeting place for the march is Newcastle’s Civic Centre, after which it will begin by heading down St Mary’s Place and onto Northumberland Street.

The Pride procession will continue onto Blackett Street, before moving on to Percy Street and then along onto Claremont Road via Barras Bridge. From there the march will head to its finishing place of the Town Moor, heading through the entrance to Exhibition Park before leading marchers to the city’s lively hub of Pride celebrations.

Road closures

The roads included in the march route will close around 10-15 minutes before the procession comes through, and will remain closed until the last person in the march has left the street. This means that drivers can expect the roads to be closed from around 11.45am until the march is finished just before 1pm.

How can I get involved in the march?

Anyone can join the march with no sign-up needed, and attendees are encouraged to get kitted out in their Pride finery and bring their flags and placards along. If you’re a group of 10 or more or are part of an organisation that would like to join the march, you should register online via the Northern Pride website.
