Newcastle's out-of-contract players could sign weekly deals if coronavirus delay continues

Players out of contract on June 30 could be permitted to sign week-by-week extensions to their contracts.

That is according to the Athletic, who report FIFA and the FA are prepared to grant special dispensation for short-term rolling contracts should this season extend beyond that date due to the coronavirus delays.

The news would be a big boost to Newcastle whose loan deals for Danny Rose, Nabil Bentaleb and Valentino Lazaro expire on June 30.

Similarly, the likes of Matty Longstaff, Javi Manquillo, Karl Darlow and Andy Carroll's contracts are set to expire on June 30 and Newcastle would be able to extend their current deals should this dispensation take place.

However, the report has also detailed the potential problems clubs could run into if the measures are introduced.

If Newcastle are still in the FA Cup, agents could use the new rule to demand bonus payments if the Magpies were to win silverware at the end of the campaign.

A similar situation could arise if Newcastle are dragged back into the relegation battle and the player is key in achieving survival.

A source told the Athletic: “You can guarantee agents will demand lucrative bonuses for themselves and their player if he is seen as crucial to club’s success for that immediate goal."
