Newcastle's new mullet-only hair salon will be a 'world's first'

Mullets were the hairstyle to have, yet really, for men back in the eighties and the Beastie Boys later helped immortalise the hairy look in their 1994 song Mullet Head.

And now that short on top, long at the back style will be back - for this weekend at least - at what's described as the 'world's first mullet-only salon' in Newcastle. Dirty Gertie’s Mullet Salon will open its doors in the city centre on Saturday where it will be recreating the hairstyle of yesteryear for free for willing volunteers.

Geordie favourite Vicky Pattison will officially open the salon in High Bridge where for two days only of live cutting action, with the free haircuts courtesy of online gaming site Foxy Bingo which is out to find the foxiest mullet in the UK. And, in keeping with its name, it will be hosting games of musical bingo every hour, with party tunes and prizes up for grabs.

It is also running a nationwide competition to win a gift card worth more than £2,000, open to those uploading their chopped locks onto social media.

Foxy Bingo says it is bringing "the mullet to the masses" with Dirty Gertie’s haircuts intended to style the wildest mullets and it will be offering a Mullet Menu for customers to choose from. Styles on offer will range from the 80s mullet to a more modern ‘shullet’. And a manicurist will be 'at hand' to offer complimentary sets of 'foxylicious nails' too.

The salon, at 15 High Bridge, will be open from 10am until 5pm on March 4 and 5 to walk-in customers who must be aged 18 or over. Those wanting to enter the competition must be over the age of 25 and to be in with a chance of winning the gift card of £2,023, people must follow @foxybingo on Instagram or Twitter and upload a picture or video of their mullet using the hashtag #FOXYMULLET.
