Newcastle's new micro-pub Wobbly Duck is all set for a crafty debut

Down a flight of steps, next to eye-catching beer barrels, in Old Eldon Square, Newcastle's newest micropub is ready for its weekend debut.

Wobbly Duck will be opening properly to the public on Friday, after a couple of small trial runs earlier in the week, and is all set to showcase a selection of craft beers, real ale and local spirits.

It's a new small independent with big ambitions, having been planned during the pandemic and set up by the team behind the city 's Beer Street Micropub and Bottle Shop under the Forth Street arches and also The Old Fox pub in Felling.

Opening in the basement space that used to be Mr Petit restaurant, the venue is looking very different from its predecessor.

It has expanded into an outdoor area at the back and has a beer garden at the front with a licence for seating on the street looking onto the Old Eldon Square green.

"The outside seating especially in the summer is going to be massive," said manager Ryan Simpson as The Chronicle was invited along for a look inside ahead of its opening.

And with the Screen on the Green summer series of free film screenings currently making a comeback in the square, the pub is set to be a hugely popular added attraction.

Its focus will be ales from independent breweries and the beer keg theme continues inside, with barrels used for tables and also hanging overhead having been converted into inspired lighting.

Rough stone walls alongside metal and more wood add to its kick-back traditional pub feel.

First customers will be able to check it out when Wobbly Duck opens its doors this Friday, July 23 at noon.

And they can pitch straight in to its first "tap takeover" as the pub showcases Newcastle 's Full Circle Brew Co as part of its North East Revival Tour.
