Newcastle's Flat Caps Coffee named among England's 50 best coffee shops

A Newcastle cafe has been named among the 50 best coffee shops in England.

Travel magazine Big 7 asked readers, social media followers and coffee experts to name the country's best independent coffee houses.

Its team drew up a list of 'The 50 Best Coffee Shops in England' .

The article highlights "small independent coffee shops who go above and beyond to bring new flavours and techniques to their local communities."

It list Flat Caps, in Carliol Square, as among England's top 50. Flat Caps was founded in 2010, in Ridley Place, before moving to a larger cafe in Carliol Square.

The article says: "They [Flat Caps] claim to be Newcastle’s first specialty coffee house established way back in 2010 and they have been leading the scene and pushing a third wave of coffee since then.

"You’ll find them on Carliol Square serving coffee, food and cakes. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten free friendly. They also encourage your to 'bring your children, bring your dog and relax'."

Flat Caps owner Joe Meagher trained in his craft at Pumphreys roasting room in Blaydon, before opening his business.

Flat Caps welcomed the accolade on its website, posting: "We’ve been in the top 50 Coffee shops in England. This makes us very proud and shows our hard work is paying off. There is a lot of great things happening in Newcastle and the North East within coffee so being the only one to make the list means a lot."
