Newcastle's driverless bus takes a spin during Supercars weekend

LAUNCH: Warners Bay racing car driver Charlotte Poynting displays the City of Newcastle mobile app in Wheeler Place on Thursday.

City of Newcastle is making its new driverless bus available for test rides in Wheeler Place during the Supercars weekend.

The bus will run from 10am on Saturday and Sunday, giving the public a first taste of the driverless technology.

Staff from transport operator Keolis Downer will be in Wheeler Place to answer questions about the bus.

The council is running two other events in the inner-city as part of its "Enjoy Newcastle" program during the Supercars weekend.

The Superkids Pitstop in Civic Park on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm includes a giant game of Monopoly, monster truck slide, obstacle course and circus workshops.

The Hunter Street mall will host billy-cart rides, live entertainment and pop-up shops.

The council has also launched a mobile app providing information on events, attractions, accommodation and hospitality businesses.

It hopes to add "augmented reality content" such as guided walking tours to the app in the future.
