Newcastle's damning record against relegation rivals does not bode well

One glance at the Premier League table tells you all you need to know about Newcastle's season to date.

While there may have been highlights - the Saudi-led takeover being one - Magpies fans have had very little to shout about this season.

The draw against Norwich in midweek is Newcastle's seventh of the campaign and they've become only the fourth side in history to reach 14 Premier League games without a win.

Unfortunately for Eddie Howe, history is not on his side with all three of those sides getting relegated to the Championship.

Nonetheless, the new Magpies boss will be wanting to write his own chapter into Newcastle's history book.

If Howe is to keep the Magpies up, he'll need to stop the worrying trend Newcastle currently have against their relegation rivals.

So far this season the Toon have picked up a meagre six points from a possible 21 against sides around them.

Of course, there have been mitigating factors in each specific game and Newcastle will feel aggrieved to have dropped two points in their recent game against the Canaries, despite playing 80 minutes with ten men.

The Magpies can ill afford any further slip ups and must pick up three points against Burnley this weekend if they're to stay in touch with the rest of the division.

If Newcastle can make it to the January transfer window, with just a few points separating them from the rest of the chasing pack, they'll have a chance.

However, the Magpies have a torrid run of fixtures between now and the beginning of the window.

They're set to face Leicester, Man City, Liverpool and Manchester United before the turn of the year, which makes this weekend's clash against Burnley look like the biggest game of the season.

A defeat, and Newcastle could be left facing down the barrel.
