Newcastle road closed due to 'safety concerns' after fire at derelict Stereo bar

A Newcastle road has been closed due to "safety concerns" after a fire broke out at a derelict bar.

The blaze broke out at the building which used to be the Stereo bar on City Road on Thursday evening.

The road remained closed on Friday morning as emergency services were at the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 6pm yesterday (Thursday) we were alerted by the fire service to a fire at Stereo’s on City Road, Newcastle.

“Officers are currently supporting the fire service to ascertain the cause of the fire. Nobody was injured.

“A road closure is currently in place from the junction of Milk Market and Forster Street up to the junction with Gibson Street.

"We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing cooperation.”

It's not the first time emergency services have responded to a fire at the building.

In 2019, police investigated a suspected arson attack after the building went up in flames.

And in August last year, firefighters were again called to the site following another blaze.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "“We can confirm that on Thursday, June 10 four fire crews were in attendance of a fire in a derelict building on City Road in Newcastle.

“The appliances were from Newcastle Central Community Fire Station and Byker Community Fire Station.

“The first crew were on the scene at 5,43pm, which is a response time of five minutes from when the initial emergency call was received by our TWFRS control room.

“We are working alongside Northumbria Police to ascertain the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspected arson."
