Newcastle restaurant Mantra Thai inspires new flavour of Walkers crisps

A Newcastle restaurant is set to have the nation's taste buds well and truly tickled after it inspired a brand new flavour of Walkers crisps.

In a massive coup for the city centre haunt, one of its most popular dishes - Thai Green Curry - has been given the Walkers treatment as part of the world famous brand's Local Taste Icons range.

Only four restaurants in the UK have been chosen by Walkers for the new line of snacks, with Mantra Thai joining Edinburgh restaurant Radhuni, with its Madras crisps; The Wetherby Whaler's fish and chips crisps and Fulham's Yucca restaurant, which has provided the inspiration for a new Chicken Burrito flavour.

Mantra Thai owners Jeab and Sunye Prapunwong – whose mantra is: ‘food is an art, cook from the heart’ – have over 30 years restaurant experience and pride themselves in serving authentic, modern Thai dishes with quality customer service.

Their passion for food and commitment to support their local community led to them delivering weekly meal donations during the pandemic.

Talking about helping to create a new Walkers flavour, they said: "Our mantra is ‘food is an art, cook from the heart’ and we’re so honoured to be able to see our art recreated into a pack of Walkers Taste Icons crisps.

"We pride ourselves on serving authentic Thai food in our restaurant right next to the River Tyne in Newcastle and are thrilled by this amazing opportunity to spread Thai tastes to people all around the UK”

Discussing the brand's Local Icons range, Katherine Cook from Walkers added:: “Over the past 18 months, we have seen that, no matter what, local restaurants have been there for us as a nation.

"This year, Walkers is supporting and celebrating local restaurants by re-creating the flavours of the delicious dishes of four, much-loved local restaurants on our crisps and telling their iconic stories on our packs.

"We picked Mantra and its iconic Thai Green Curry after considerable research into their community impact and customer reviews. Mantra stood out to us particularly because of the passion of its owners for serving authentic food and commitment to supporting the local community."
