Newcastle respond to fresh Sean Longstaff Manchester United transfer speculation

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said the club has no intention of selling its best young players after being asked about Manchester United's interest in Sean Longstaff.

United targeted central midfielder Longstaff in the summer but baulked at Newcastle's £50million valuation of the 22-year-old. At the time, Longstaff had made just nine Premier League appearances.

United ended the summer without signing a midfielder, despite having seen Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera depart earlier in the year.

"Look I have said it from day one, we can never stop the speculation," Bruce said when asked about reported fresh interest from United in Longstaff.

"As far as I am concerned I know Mick Phelan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer very well and at this moment I don't know anything about it.

"We don't want to sell our best young players. That's certainly the case with Longy.

"This time last year he was just breaking through and he got in because of injury.

"The kid has done very well and let's see if we can keep playing."
