Newcastle ranked fourth most Instagrammable university city in the UK

As young people prepare to either continue or start student life, a survey has been carried out to see which university cities are the most 'Instagrammable' .

Researchers at Heriot-Watt University analysed the total number of hashtags associated with every university in England, Scotland and Wales through Instagram data.

Newcastle ranked fourth with 193,162 university hashtags on the hugely popular photo and video sharing social networking service.

First was London with 478,512 hashtags followed by Oxford (421,273) and Cambridge (261,372).

Meanwhile, Durham was ranked 14th in England with 71,674 university hashtags and Sunderland came 26th with 34,152.

It's not the first time the beautiful and photogenic city of Newcastle has featured near the top of Instagram-related surveys.

Earlier this year Newcastle's Grey Street was named one of the most 'Instagrammed' streets in the UK (ncjMedia)

Recently we reported on how Grey Street was the 12th most 'Instagrammed' street in the UK with 23,783 Instagram hashtags, and the eighth in England.

Newcastle is of course renowned for its art, culture and nightlife providing a rich variety of buildings, events and sights.

This explains why it topped other prestigious universities in popular locations like Birmingham, Manchester, York and Bath to name just a few.

Earlier this year Newcastle was named one of the best 'second cities' on Earth by travel website RoughGuides.com which listed Newcastle among 20 cities which aren't country capitals that saw it sit proudly sits alongside the likes of Mumbai, Bruges and Barcelona on the list with the website full of praise for the city.

While the same travel guide named Newcastle the best place to visit in the world in 2018.

It was a good result for Durham which although historic and with many eye-catching sights, has less activities than Newcastle.

And while Sunderland lagged behind, the 34,152 hashtags it scored was something Peterborough could only dream about. It came bottom of the rankings in the whole of the UK with just 215 related posts.
