Newcastle Racecourse responds as Northumberland Plate and Ladies Day hopes grow

Following the 2020 wipeout, it's no surprise that everyone will be longing to see a revival - albeit gradual - of events that have played a huge part in the Newcastle social scene.

And the road map out of lockdown announced on Monday has offered people more hope than they have had in a long time that they can get back out and about enjoying what they most love.

The planned phased return to a more normal way of life is great news for the city and for the many who have been missing its celebrated social life.

Among the events which fell victim to pandemic restrictions last summer were the Northumberland Plate and Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse.

The Gosforth Park events are highlights of both the sporting and social calendars with fashionistas planning their outfits - especially for Ladies Day - often months in advance.

While it is still early days for the ironing out of the road map details, many people will be wondering - and hoping - that these race-days can make a comeback this summer as the restrictions on sport and outdoor events are eased.

Paul Elliott, general manager of Newcastle Racecourse, said: “We very much welcome the announcement and look forward to working to make sure that we can welcome spectators back on course as soon as possible, hopefully in time for some of our major fixtures over the summer.

"We’ll be working closely with our colleagues across the racing industry, including other racecourses and the British Horseracing Authority, to make sure that we can follow all of the appropriate Government guidelines, as they develop."
