Newcastle pupil set for career in Criminology after A level success on her 18th birthday

Double celebrations are in order for a Newcastle pupil who received her A level results today.

Loren Young was beaming when she discovered she had been accepted into her chosen university, on her 18th birthday.

After two years of hard work, which was impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic, Loren admitted her time in sixth form had been challenging at times.

But she was over the moon when she opened her results to learn she had achieved the grades to allow her to take the next steps in securing her dream career in Criminology.

Loren said: "I'm looking forward to celebrating my 18th birthday and my A level results with family.

"I've worked hard, and obviously due to Covid there's been some restrictions, but now I'm looking forward to celebrating.

After completing her studies at Excelsior Academy, on Denton Road, Loren said she feels "excited and nervous" about moving on to study a degree in Criminology at Northumbria University.

She was accepted onto the course after being awarded a B in the subject at A level, as well as a B in Psychology and a Distinction* in Sport.

Loren added: "It's great to be able to start the next chapter in my life."

The 18-year-old was one of many pupils at Excelsior Academy to be offered a place at university today, after receiving her teacher assessed grades, determined by mock exams, coursework, essays and in-class tests, after exams were cancelled for a second year due to the pandemic.

Among those was, Daniel Tierney, who is going to continue his love of maths at Newcastle University, and Habibullah Shaphal who is going to study accountancy at the highly competitive Durham University.

Nelly Ochebiri was accepted onto a place at Nottingham University to study Criminology.

Excelsior Academy Principal, James Andriot, said: "We're delighted that young people have managed to get through the last 18 months of the pandemic, two lockdowns and virtual learning.

"They've shown a great deal of determination, resilience and grit to get to today."
