Newcastle primary school share special message thanking NHS workers in a show of solidarity

As schools prepared to cease teaching for most pupils across England, children from a Newcastle Primary school came together to show their appreciation for NHS workers.

Pupils from Chillingham Road Primary School, in Heaton, gathered in their school yard to perform a rendition of Kenny Rogers’ song, Something Inside So Strong.

Their performance of the 80s hit, that has been covered by a number of artists, demonstrated a real moment of solidarity.

It is even more moving in that Kenny Rogers passed away over the weekend aged 75.

And children held banners thanking NHS staff for their work during the coronavirus and asked people to ‘stay strong’.

One parent who lives near the school took to Facebook to express her appreciation and explain that she was moved to tears by the thoughtful gesture.

She said: “I think it’s so important to shout out loud when you’re impressed with work that people do.

“[My family] have been isolated for three days but we live opposite the school and see so much through our window.

“Every single day I see the teachers perform tiny acts of kindness in the yard.

“Today we looked outside and the older pupils in the school were assembled in the yard with little banners they’d made themselves.

“They said things like ‘Sharing is caring’, ‘Thank you NHS’ and ‘We will get through this’.

“Under the encouragement of [head teacher] Mr Wassall and the other amazing teachers, the children raised their lovely, homemade banners high and sang their little hearts out to ‘Something Inside so Strong’- it was really quite something.”

A video of their moving performance was later shared to the school’s Facebook page, where the staff and pupils were further praised for their actions.

Many thanked them for their work, particularly during this uncertain time.

One person commented: “Such a great community. We’ll miss this so much over the next few months, but I’m sure it will keep going in some way online.”

While another said: “Thank you Chilli Road for all you have done and continue to do for our children. I’m crying my eyes out at that.

“We will miss you all so much, but we will get through it together and life will return to normal at some point soon.”
