Newcastle pre-season Portugal camp revealed as United make summer plans

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Newcastle United will spend part of pre-season in Portugal.

The Magpies were expected to fly to the country last year but the trip was cancelled due to the global pandemic and health and safety concerns.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle play in any type of full scale friendly matches on their trip, but there were suggestions earlier this week that a clash with Peterborough United was lined up.

Newcastle played a series of behind closed doors friendly games last summer and even though fans have been given the green light to return to the terraces, ticket details are awaited for games at York and Harrogate, fixtures already announced last week.

As it stands, Portugal is one of the countries on the green list for summer travel with Man City and Chelsea fans preparing to fly out for the Champions League final in Porto later this month.

But Bruce, speaking to BBC Newcastle, said: "We’re still talking.

"I would think if we went away there wouldn’t be any games - it wouldn’t be wise to play games and have people travelling.

"We’re looking at a couple of camps: one in this country, and one in Portugal."
