Newcastle Police District has installed an acting commander after the boss of the city's cops for the past three years recently took a position in Sydney.
Former Northern Region Operations Manager Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey has been made the new acting police chief in Newcastle, NSW Police has confirmed.
Superintendent Brett Greentree, who became Newcastle's police commander in late 2017, has taken on the role of commander of the NSW Police Communications and Security Command.

It is understood that Detective Superintendent Humphrey will act in the role until a permanent replacement for Superintendent Greentree is employed.
Superintendent Greentree was previously commander of Lake Macquarie Police District and took the reigns in Newcastle when Superintendent John Gralton moved on to the Tuggerah Lakes command.
Beginning his policing career in Sydney CBD, Superintendent Greentree moved to Moree where he became a detective and over the years worked across the state - including at Inverell, Tingha, Tweed Heads, Tamworth, Bourke and Maitland. He also spent time as a staff officer in the NSW Police Commissioner's office in Sydney.
The Communications and Security Command runs the state's police radio and telephone services - including the Triple Zero police emergency line and the Crime Stoppers anonymous reporting line - among a range of other communications and security operations.
