Newcastle passengers warned of major timetable changes affecting TransPennine trains this Christmas

Newcastle rail passengers set to travel over the Christmas period are being urged to check their journeys as TransPennine has announced major timetable changes.

The train operator is warning passengers to 'be prepared' for timetables to change in December as a result of engineering work by Network Rail. The changes start on Sunday, December 11, and will affect a number of routes from Newcastle Central Station.

Affected journeys include Newcastle to Manchester Airport, Redcar/Middlesbrough to Manchester Airport, Scarborough to Liverpool, Edinburgh to Liverpool, Newcastle to Edinburgh, and Hull to Manchester Piccadilly.

TransPennine said that the changes are to ensure that it can run a reliable service for customers while Network Rail carries out major engineering work. It said the work is due to continue over the Christmas period into New Year, and warned that services "will be significantly impacted."

Kathryn O’Brien, customer service and operations director at TransPennine Express, said: “We are planning to make some changes to our current timetable next month and are encouraging customers to check their journeys taking place from December 11 onwards.

“Our number one focus is providing the most reliable and punctual service possible for customers, and we continue to prioritise this following the recent disruption which has impacted some of those using our trains.

“In light of the current challenges affecting our services, we have to be realistic and have made some short-term changes to what we originally wanted to deliver. Our priority is delivering a train service people can depend on whether it’s getting them to work, school, or an important appointment.”
