Newcastle owners' 'short term' ambition to remove Sports Direct signage

Newcastle's new owners are hopeful they'll be able to remove Sports Direct signage from St. James' Park in the 'short term' after taking over the club.

The Daily Mail claims that the new owners are legally bound to keep the signage up in the ground, due to clauses inserted into the deal by former owner Mike Ashley.

However, Amanda Staveley is hopeful the signs will be able to come down in the 'short term.'

The advertising was still present in the ground for Newcastle's # Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend.

The current sponsorship deal is set to run out at the end of this season.

The Mail on Sunday revealed the Magpies earned a meagre £2,205,000 from sponsorship deals Ashley's retail outfit - translating to just £157,500-a-year.

The decision could come back to haunt the Magpies given the Premier League's recent block on Saudi sponsorship.

Eighteen of the 20 Premier League clubs voted to block outlandish sponsorship deals that would allow Newcastle to find a way round current Financial Fair Play regulations.

The motion blocks any unrealistic sponsorship deals which the new Saudi owners could utilise.
