Newcastle notified of Callum Wilson's fitness status while Eddie Howe offers update on injured duo

Newcastle United are in regular dialogue with England on Callum Wilson after their number 9 sat out of training with the Three Lions over in Qatar.

Wilson has suffered a minor muscle strain but Eddie Howe insists he is "fine" and should be back in action sooner rather than later. Although, like Newcastle have managed to do expertly this season, Wilson's game plan will be managed carefully by Gareth Southgate.

Howe, speaking from the team's HQ in Riyadh, said today: "I've been in regular contact with Callum and England. "Not necessarily me but our sports science team and medical team.

"He's fine. "He's really enjoying himself and I think he's training very well. We're really happy to hear that."

Howe is also closely monitoring the players he has with him too, including Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett who have barely featured in the Premier League this season. On Dummett, Howe said: "He's still working towards full fitness. Initially he had a calf problem, but now he's got a slight back problem. We don't think it's nothing serious at this stage but he's not with the main group."

And on Ritchie, Howe reflected: "Matty is working very hard, he's very close. "We expect him to train, hopefully in the next couple of days."
