Newcastle notes: How Everton boss made Steve Bruce's nerves jangle late on with cheeky comment

Newcastle United have only started a season better than this once in the last 13 years.

Given the manner in which the Magpies have played at times this term, it may sound like a baffling thing to say, but the statistics show that Steve Bruce's first seven matches of the season have delivered a good solid record - regardless of his critics.

Only Alan Pardew - in 2011/12 - netted more points at this stage when he picked up 15 on the way to a fifth place finish.

You'd have to go back to the 2007/08 season, under Sam Allardyce, to find a better start other than that.

Of course there's plenty of room for improvement, and Bruce has enjoyed his fair share of luck and the benefit of some refereeing decisions, but the old saying: "The league table doesn't lie" comes into play now.

Newcastle are 10 points clear of the bottom three and looking up the table rather than down.

Callum Wilson's start is better than a star-studded list of those who came before him

Given Alan Shearer, Andy Cole, Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba all got off to good starts in the Premier League in Newcastle's line of attack, Wilson knew he was going to have it all to do to impress on Tyneside after his £20million move from AFC Bournemouth.

But the England international has delivered with six goals in his first seven matches at St James' Park.

Only Les Ferdinand has reached six goals in fewer appearances (six back in 1995/96 season) and that is really is some going by Wilson after just seven Premier League matches.

Long may it continue.

It felt like Déjà vu was on the cards in another Everton vs Newcastle fixture - and Carlo Ancelotti knew it

As six minutes of stoppage time was displayed at St James' Park memories of the clash between the two teams at Goodison Park.

That night two goals by Florian Lejeune in stoppage time salvaged a point on Merseyside.

Surely it couldn't happen again?

But as Dominic Calvert-Lewin slotted home from a tight angle and goalkeeper Robin Olsen headed up for a corner kick, don't tell me you weren't beginning to wonder.

Thankfully, Newcastle cleared their lines, but Bruce revealed after the game: "Ancelotti said to me, 'Remember last year?' when we scored two in the last 30 seconds."

United can laugh about it now but the screams of delight said it all after the game.
