Newcastle has been ranked in the top 20 places to raise a baby, whilst Sunderland was named amongst the worst.

According to new research carried out by Play Like Mum, a doll and pushchair specialist, Newcastle just missed on a top 10 spot, ranking at number 11 in the list of best baby-friendly cities in the UK.

Factors considered included the cost of childcare, child safety and how many family-friendly attractions and restaurants each city.

The number of ramp-accessible parks, shops and children’s play areas in each city were also considered, as well as the number of public toilets with baby-changing facilities.

The research also found the worst places to raise a baby in, with Coventry being named as the "worst to start a family." The research concluded that The West Midlands city has one of the lowest safety ratings across the country at just 39. With few family attractions to visit and a limited choice for dining out, new parents might choose to stay away.

Sunderland also ranked near the bottom at number eight, with a overall score of 3.38, and coming 34th place out of 41 in the charts.

The search revealed that Newcastle had a average cost of childcare totalling £890 a month, which is very low in comparison to Westminster's astounding figure of £2,133 a month. Cheapest on the list was Leicester, where childcare costs a average of £470 a month.

Newcastle also came 10th for being pram friendly, with a score of 2.19 out of 10 and was also revealed to have 20 child-friendly restaurants per 10,000 people

The overall safety score for the city is 60.76 out of 100, pushing the city out of the top 10 spots for safety. In first place was Chelmsford in Essex.
