Newcastle named dog-loving capital of the UK

Geordies are the nation’s biggest dog lovers according to new statistics.

Moonpig have revealed the UK’s dog-loving hotspots – with Newcastle coming at the top of every city in the country.

According to the personalised card retailer, who is celebrating both London Dog Week and their own birthday card range, residents purchased a whopping 12, 263 canine-related cards, with 634 sold per 10,000 people.

This meant that Newcastle beat out runner-up Manchester, which purchased 18,045 cards overall, but had a lower volume, at 456 per 10,000.

Glasgow is third on the list, with a volume of 329 bought per 10,000 people, plus 19,467 overall.

Although London did not rank in the top 10, the city boasted the highest volume – an impressive 7,556,900 cards purchased.

Moonpig’s data also found that birthdays were the celebration where dog-related content was purchased the most.

However, cards purchased “from your dog” were most popular for Mother’s Day, with nearly 2,000 sent around that day over the last two years.

As well as the dog-loving capitals of the UK, Moonpig also recently crowned the nation’s cutest dog.

Following a competition earlier this year and a final public vote, the winner – and new face of Moonpig – has now been named as 14-month-old white German Shepherd Rosie, from Hull.

Owner Megan Allinson told TeamDogs : “I am so proud of her, in my eyes she is the cutest dog ever but I guess I am biased as I’m her mum!

“It’s great to see a German Shepherd winning a competition like this as I know sometimes they are perceived as these big scary aggressive dogs.

“I don’t understand the bad name they have because honestly Rosie is a big soft cuddly bear and would not hurt a fly quite literally!”

The ‘runner-pups’, meanwhile, included three-year-old Rottweiler Jeremy, from Lincoln, and Leamington Spa-based crossbreed Roo, who was rescued from Cyprus and turns three in November, and Frank, a 15-year-old miniature silver and black dapple longhair dachshund from South West London.

Top 10 dog-loving cities according to Moonpig card sales:

1. Newcastle upon Tyne

2. Manchester

3. Glasgow

4. Norwich

5. Leeds

6. Bristol

7. Northampton

8. Aberdeen

9. Southampton

10. Cardiff
