Newcastle named as rivals for Tottenham in £30m race for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips

Newcastle United have been named among the clubs keeping tabs on Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is courting the attention of a number of Premier League sides.

The 23-year-old midfielder has already been subject of an £11m bid from newly-promoted Aston Villa but Leeds are holding out for a figure closer to the £30m mark.

According to the Mirror , Tottenham are also eyeing a move for the midfielder, having already landed Jack Clarke from the Elland Road side this summer, but the report interestingly adds that Newcastle are keen.

Having sold Ayoze Perez to Leicester City, Newcastle are in the market for midfield improvements and Phillips, although a more defensive player than the Spaniard, would be a solid addition.

Currently on a £10k-a-week contract at Elland Road, Leeds are keen to secure their academy graduate down to improved terms but have seen their opening offer rejected.

However, they are confident that Phillips will not agitate for a move but the chase for his signature could change that stance, with Wolves and Bournemouth also attributed with an interest this summer.

Named in the EFL Team of the Season last term, Phillips was a key part of Marcelo Bielsa's promotion-chasing side and will be crucially important to Leeds in their bid to end a long awaited return to the Premier League next year.

Phillips played all 90 minutes for Leeds in a 2-1 victory over Guiseley in a pre-season friendly on Thursday evening and will travel with the squad to Australia next week for clashes with Manchester United and Perth Glory.

Overall, he made 44 league appearances for Leeds in the Championship last season as Bielsa's side were defeated by Derby County in the playoff semi-finals.
