Newcastle named as one of the best UK city break destinations by Conde Nast

Those of us who live in the city know how great it is, but now Newcastle has been named as one of 10 cities that are having "a particularly storming year" by an upmarket travel magazine.

Condé Nast Traveller's editors say the Toon is among the 10 best UK city breaks for 2019.

The article christens Newcastle as 'the riverside revival city' and describes the city's Quayside as "a reimagined riverside for urban escapism".

It has ranked among cities including Cambridge, Manchester and Bath for British cities outside of London that have plenty to offer as destinations.

It also encourages readers to visit Ouseburn, "one of the city’s most rapidly evolving neighbourhoods".

And in the city centre, writers point to eating and drinking establishments including tapas restaurant Kaltur , new French eatery Saint Vincent, and secret cocktail bar The Poison Cabinet .

Here's what Condé Nast had to say about our fair city.

The Quayside

"The city’s Quayside, once a tumultuous clank of coal and steamships, has been on the rise since the Millennium as a reimagined riverside for urban escapism. From May, its pop-up  beach  will return for seaside hijinks. And in a couple of years, visitors may be able to get an overview from a planned 140-metre wheel – higher than the  London  Eye and nicknamed the Whey Aye."

Ouseburn

"While relics of the past remain, it’s now one of the city’s most rapidly evolving neighbourhoods, clustered around the well-established Cluny music venue and Seven Stories, the national centre for  children ’s books.

The Ship serves some of the best  vegetarian  food on Tyneside, the Kiln does great breakfasts, while the subterranean Brinkburn Street Bar & Kitchen has more than a dozen cask beers plus small dishes such as vindaloo Scotch egg and Hasselback potatoes. And for smart dining with a spin, try Anna Hedworth’s superb Cook House."

"In the city centre, Spanish food specialist Kaltuur now has a restaurant in Dean Street to complement its tiny tapas place in High Bridge. Local super-chef Terry Laybourne’s latest venture Saint Vincent, with an old-school French menu, is predictably wonderfully, while The Poison Cabinet, a secret cocktail bar tucked away under Bierex, is the place to go for  speakeasy  glamour. And just visible on the horizon is a new luxe address from the Gainford Group, which is turning a former Premier Inn into a sleek new hotel with a rooftop bar, close to Stack Newcastle, the shipping-container foodie hub on Pilgrim Street."
