Newcastle morning headlines as Carroll hails Joelinton performance and Ashley backs Bruce

Here are your Newcastle morning headlines for Sunday, November 29.

Hall reveals moment he knew to sell Magpies

Former Newcastle owner Sir John Hall has revealed the moment he knew when to sell the club was when Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003.

Having bought the club in 1992, Hall oversaw several title challenges for the Magpies but knew he would no longer be able to compete financially with new owners coming into the league, and would eventually sell his shares to Sports Direct owner Mike Ashley in 2007.

Sir John told The Athletic , as per the Chronicle : "We all knew. Doug Ellis at Aston Villa, Bill Kenwright at Everton, even the owners of Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal...we'd all put our money in, but the oligarch took everything to a new level.

"A billionaire came in at Chelsea and, overnight, there was no way we could compete financially. Yes, I'm wealthy, but not at his level. He could trump everything we'd been doing for years, the way we all ran football.

"His money changed the game. It changed the way football was being run. He could do anything."

CRYSTAL PALACE 0-2 NEWCASTLE - LEE RYDER'S VERDICT

No pressure on Bruce position

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has not even considered replacing Steve Bruce as manager at St. James’s Park, according to a report in the Chronicle .

Successive tame defeats to Southampton and Chelsea raised questions on Bruce’s suitability for the job before Friday night’s 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace.

That match saw the Magpies revert to a 4-4-2 system with success and secured a much-needed three points to arrest the run of poor results.

However, Ashley has not thought about the possibility of replacing Bruce, who is said to have held a ‘clear the air’ style talk with his squad this past week.

Carroll hails ‘absolutely brilliant’ teammate

Newcastle United forward Joelinton earned the praise of teammate Andy Carroll following Friday night’s win at Crystal Palace.

The Brazilian provided the assist for Callum Wilson to open the scoring late on for the Magpies before scoring the second in injury time to complete the late victory.

Carroll wrote on Twitter, responding to the official club account, as per HITC.com : “Absolutely brilliant from our number 9 tonight. Never stopped working and a well deserved goal to top it off!!”

Joelinton has endured a difficult time at the club but Friday night’s performance is sure to give him a much-needed confidence boost.
