Newcastle Metro Arena is illuminated by thousands of lights to remember loved ones

Thousands of loved ones were remembered as Newcastle’s Metro Arena was lit up in for a heartwarming festive tribute.

St Oswald’s Light Up A Life service took place on Wednesday night and hundreds of people gathered to remember friends and relatives who have lost their battles with cancer.

Each year the hospice organises a memorial concert in the run up to Christmas and thousands of lights illuminated a Christmas tree - each one a tribute to someone who has passed away.

The concert included performances by Robsons Choice, Voices of Hope, Newcastle Concert Band and Longbenton Community College Choir, and a version of Away in a Manger which saw almost every child in the audience take to the stage.

Siobhan Sargeant, fundraiser at St Oswald’s Hospice, said: “Light Up A Life is always a very special uplifting evening.

“People come along every year to take a quiet moment and reflect during the busy Christmas season.”
