Newcastle Mela mixes music, art, culture and food on a perfect bank holiday

Newcastle hosted a two-day Mela in perfect weather over the bank holiday weekend.

The South Asian cultural celebration drew crowds into Exhibition Park on Sunday and bank holiday Monday.

They were treated to a mixture of contemporary and traditional music, art and theatrical performances, underneath clear skies and warm sunshine.

All are welcome at the Mela , with people from all backgrounds encouraged to join the fun and sample culture from the Indian subcontinent.

"We enjoy the Mela because it's a chance for all the cultures to come back together, like Bengalis, Pakistanis, Indians... and it just becomes more alive," Sibgha Amin, 18, told ChronicleLive.

Faizah Chowdhury, also 18, added: "The food and the music is really good too, and it gives people who are not part of the culture the chance to enjoy it as well.

"You can get your henna done, try continental foods - it's just a really good experience."

Sigbha added: "You get to experience everything for yourself: the food, what we dress like and just everything like that."

Performers included Punjabi singer Juggy D, who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Mary J Blige during his career.

H Dhami, Asif Khan, Sher Yar Khan and Nishaa George were also among the acts on a bill.

Food was another huge part of the Mela, with stalls selling curries, pakora, Pan Puri and desserts like Falooda and Jalebi.

Visitors could try out a British Army assault course, or take on a cycle track, with bikes and gear provided for free.

Taj Mohammed, Chairperson at Newcastle Asian Arts and Music, said: "Newcastle Mela increases with popularity year on year – we like to push the boundaries with the programme that we offer our visitors - and because of that, we have achieved a very credible place in the region’s arts and events calendar, as well as in the hearts of our audiences."
