Newcastle may have already found 'one of Premier League's fastest players' says opposition boss

Ryan Fraser has been hailed as 'one of the fastest players in the Premier League' by Doncaster Rovers boss Richie Wellens after the Scotland international's impressive display at the Keepmoat Stadium on Friday night.

With more than 3,100 Newcastle supporters watching on in the away end, Fraser caught the eye in a new central midfield role in the Magpies' 3-2 friendly win against the League One outfit.

Fraser opened the scoring with a fine low drive on 12 minutes before he later threaded a superb through ball into Callum Wilson's path for Newcastle's third goal in the second half.

After struggling with injuries during his first campaign at the club, clearly, Fraser will benefit from his first full pre-season with Newcastle after only joining the black-and-whites a few days before last season's opener against West Ham.

On his day, Fraser can be rapid - clocking up a top speed of 33.3km/hr last season - and Wellens certainly did not need reminding of that.

"Our game management needs to be better. We knew we could get countered on because they've got speed," he told reporters after the game.

"For the first goal, Louis [Jones] kicks it while we're open. We lose the first ball and it lands in the middle of the pitch to one of the fastest players in the Premier League - never mind League One - and he scores from the edge of the box.

"The next two are counter-attack goals where we could commit a foul. For the second one, our midfield players track all the way into the six-yard box when there's no one there so we'll work on them.

"We're fine. We know we lacked a bit of power in certain areas but I think, overall, it was a great exercise and there were a lot of positives to come from it."

Fraser's mother, Debbie, was actually a 100-metre sprinter for Scotland when she was younger and the 27-year-old has previously credited his Mum for his natural pace.
