Newcastle man fined for visiting friend in Sydney, police say

Police say they saw little trouble around the Hunter on Anzac Day, as the region marked the occasion under COVID-19 restrictions.

Lake Macquarie Police Inspector Paul Laksa said officers had to remind some people who had congregated at the region's beaches about the rules, but all moved on without incident when police spoke with them.

Meanwhile, a Newcastle man visiting a friend in Sydney is among the latest people fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions.

Police said officers stopped the man as he was walking along Barlow Street at Haymarket on Saturday afternoon.

Police allege the man told officers he was in Sydney visiting a friend, but he had been previously warned about breaking the rules when stopped in Sydney CBD on April 16.

He received a $1000 fine and was told to return to Newcastle.

In another matter, police fined a 62-year-old man at Long Jetty who was required to self-isolate while he waited for COVID-19 test results.

Police say the man visited a supermarket on Wednesday.
