Newcastle linked with Hazard, Alli and Sarr transfers - but current stars can earn cult status

Newcastle United have been linked with Eden Hazard, Dele Alli and Ismaila Sarr - and that's just in the last 24 hours.

You could probably name a strong World XI of stars connected with Newcastle since October 7 when the takeover went through with new directors Amanda Staveley and Jamie Reuben inundated with calls and messages from agents punting their clients towards the Magpies.

There's no doubt, Newcastle 's new owners are keen to make United stronger but as things stand they are carefully assessing their options.

Of course, a decision needs to be made on a head coach and director of football first and that's before the prospect of a new managing director is confirmed.

And while the shopping days ahead of the January window are ticking away the reality is Newcastle will need to reduce their current playing squad first.

One plus is that United, unlike the previous few seasons, are no longer carrying any non-playing high earners such as Henri Saivet or Achraf Lazaar.

A sensible decision then needs to be made on the goalkeepers with four players currently registered due to a summer injury crisis in that department.

Whoever arrives as new coach will have to assess the prospects of a clutch of players who have been used sparingly such as Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser and then there is the £40million Joelinton conundrum.

Whatever happens Newcastle need a boost somewhere in the squad after Christmas if they are to avoid a tough second half to the season.

A superstar signing like Hazard would certainly pacify supporters for a while but for many the arrival of some solid loan additions would be enough.

United's mission, hopefully for one last time, is simply to remain in the Premier League this season.

After that bigger targets can be discussed and the ambition that the new custodians of the club can hopefully be realised.

Every fan has fun playing fantasy football and discussing dream targets, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it'll be the players who scrapped and battled their way to top-flight survival in the 2021/22 season that could end up being remembered just as fondly.

In the same way that stars like David Kelly and Gavin Peacock laid the foundations for the Entertainers era under Kevin Keegan back in 1992, the current crop can earn themselves a place in one of the more positive chapters of club history.

If Callum Wilson or Joelinton scores the winner at Norwich in April that secures United's top-flight place it might be a moment that lives with you forever.
