Newcastle Ladies Day best-dressed racegoers raise the fashion stakes once more

Glamour was on display on Saturday as North East race-goers once again raised the the fashion stakes.

Ladies Day at Gosforth Park in Newcastle proved a showcase not just for the horses in action over the day's seven races but also for the crowds of spectators who braved the rain to dress in their finery.

For most, like Dianne Kelly of Whickham, Gateshead, and Donna Laws of Heworth, planning a Ladies Day outfit starts well in advance. “Since last year!” said Dianne. “That’s when I saw the dress”. Then it was a matter of having a hat made to match the outfit. And, when they heard of potentially hat-ruining rain, “we upgraded our tickets to the marquee!”

There were some stunning outfits, with many women choosing to have a hat specially made to complement their outfit. Two ladies, Lynne Corrall-Wynes and Pamela White, had decided just two days ago to attend and stood out in vibrant pinks and red.

Most had planned their outfits well in advance and coordinated umbrellas became an added fashion accessory.

There were large groups of all ages and a party atmosphere prevailed, with many planning to keep the party going long after the end of the day’s racing.
