Newcastle keeps eye on Barilaro's Stockton promise

Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes and Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp say they expect the government to honour John Barilaro's promise to fix Stockton beach.

The Deputy Premier, who announced his departure from politics on Monday, pledged in June that the government would pay for offshore sand dredging to replenish the eroded beach.

The Minister for Regional NSW said at the time that City of Newcastle should apply for a mining licence then the government would provide "whatever resources they need".

Ms Nelmes praised Mr Barilaro on Monday for "shifting the NSW government forward 10 years" in its willingness to address Stockton's woes and for his support of a diversified port.

"My expectation is his replacement will continue the work he started," she said.

Mr Crakanthorp said Mr Barilaro had done "fantastic work" on Stockton. "I don't plan on letting the new minister walk away from these commitments," he said.

A government source said the Nationals would honour commitments made under Mr Barilaro's watch.
